The Defence Ministry has accepted a Rs 2,800 crore request for the purchase of about 6,400 rockets for Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems, which is a significant boost for the Indian Army.
According to sources, the procurement of two variants of these rockets, called Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type-3, was approved at a recent meeting of the Defence Procurement Council of the Ministry of Defence.
The Indian Army would only purchase the rockets from domestic suppliers; the two primary bidders are the Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and Munitions India Limited, one of the ammunition-producing businesses established through the corporatization of the former Ordnance Factories.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation of India is responsible for the development of the Pinaka weapon system, which is named after the Hindu god Shiva’s bow. The weapon system is among the first military terminology from India that has been transferred to other nations, such as Armenia. Economic Explosives Limited, Tata Defence, and Larsen & Toubro are among the private-sector firms working on the project. Production lines for the Pinaka system have been established, and the armed forces are receiving large supplies from them.
